Sarcoma Research University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center

All event proceeds benefit Sarcoma Research

University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center has an expert team that specializes in treating sarcomas. Holden is also a member of the Sarcoma Alliance for Research Collaboration and the Midwest Sarcoma Trials Partnership, which gives our doctors the ability to offer more clinical trials to their sarcoma patients.  The Center collaborates with other Big Ten university to share clinical trial results and findings and expand those research efforts.

Holden Cancer Center is Iowa’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and has held that designation since 2000. The NCI designation recognizes the cancer center, and its research scientists, physicians, and other health care professionals, for their roles in advancing cancer research that impacts the ability to prevent, detect and treat patients with cancer.

Iowa has been treating cancer patients for decades. To enhance these efforts, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center was started in 2000 and the Sarcoma research group was launched in 2008. Today it consists of 20 physicians and specialists and services all counties in Iowa as well as multiple states and countries. UI HCCC is funded through patient care, grants, and most critically by monetary donations.

Oncologists who specialize in sarcoma are very hard to find. Because sarcoma is so rare, and because there are so many kinds of sarcoma, very few oncologists (cancer doctors) are specially trained to diagnose and treat it. The United States has about 50 oncologists who specialize in sarcoma. Two of those specialists work at Holden.

Sarcoma care at Holden is provided by an entire team of experts. Each cancer patient is treated by a group that includes experts in multiple areas, such as surgery, radiology, pathology, and genetic counseling. Care teams meet weekly to discuss your sarcoma, and they’re joined by scientific researchers who help them create a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs.

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization which is focused specifically on Sarcoma research.  For more information, go to https://uihc.org/sarcoma-program.
